genre: literary fiction
synopsis: a girl moves in with her father and his family after he discovers her mother’s alcoholism
setting: zambia, 1970s and present day
thoughts: i liked the characters – especially getting to see pumpkin as a nine-year-old and then later as an adult. my favorite part was seeing how banda aaku wove together the threads of the first section with that of the second. it also gives a glimpse into zambian history – part of the story takes place during the conflict of the 1970s. i want to do a better job of reading books by people who are from the places about which they write, and this was one of my first concrete efforts to do so. i liked it and would recommend it!
