yesterday in church we heard about unconventional self-image. it came from matthew 5:3 – “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
the poor in this time were considered pretty much invisible. Jesus says here we are blessed to be like that! it’s so countercultural; it fits with no culture in the world. basically, it says, “have nothing. come with nothing.” without spiritual poverty, we cannot approach the throne of God.
i feel like even living less materialistically would help in humbling oneself. as americans our pride is so entrenched in what we have and how much we have. i’ve thought recently that i’d like a simpler existence. one not so harried and frazzled, caught up with accomplishments and successes.
rather, i’d like to live deliberately, focusing on the sweetness of a life centered on Christ.
