ten | you know the difference between mackinaw and mackinac
there are three things that have one of the two variations of this name. from south to north: the city, the bridge, the island. the city is mackinaw. the bridge and the island are mackinac. the reason for the variation is because although the french inhabited the area first, the british decided to respell it when they came.
eleven | turning left involves turning right
in driver’s ed, they teach us it’s called the michigan left. in the vernacular, it’s just called making a u-turn.
regardless, you can’t just follow the red line straight and left if that’s the direction you intend to go. instead, you first turn right, get in the left lane, and make a u-turn, just like the blue line shows. this is done on major roads to decrease the likelihood of traffic accidents in the intersection, and while it involves going out of your way, i think it’s a good idea.
twelve | the unofficial state bird is the mosquito
every summer, everyone i know gets an uncountable number of mosquito bites. myself included.
it’s a fun time.
i hope you’ve enjoyed this picture into michigan! i’ve enjoyed writing it and sharing my state with you.
