synopsis: william, while living through famine, decides to build a windmill for electricity so he and his family will never go hungry again
setting: malawi, early 2000s
thoughts: this was a surreally heartwarming story. despite the hardship the kamkwambas experienced, william’s tone remains determined and hopeful. he discusses about his engineering exploits frankly and humbly; science comes intuitively and naturally to him. most of the technical details went over my head – and this is before william himself even fully understands the science behind what he’s doing, which he later explains and which also went over my head. you don’t have to understand the science, though, to enjoy the story or comprehend the magnitude of william’s accomplishment. i recommend this book wholeheartedly and to everyone!
