i hate twilight. hate. with a burning, fiery passion.
i have ranted about this before, mostly in person but also in a post from two and a half years ago. i am not bothering to link the post because a rant helps no one, and because i have a far more intelligent summation of why twilight makes me angry:
1. there is no notable plot.
2. there is no character development.
3. one could argue there is no character, period. bella swan’s personality is as flat as the nebraska landscape.
4. it is poorly written.
i never once have mentioned, until i was talking to nicole on skype last friday, that when i read twilight (just the first book), i felt dirty.
there isn’t really any erotica in twilight, but there is some awkward sexual tension. & i hear it only gets worse as you keep going through the series. between two humans, that would be warning enough, but between humans and vampires?
a vampire is a creature of the night.
we are to have no association whatsoever with things of the dark. imaginary or otherwise.
For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? // 2 corinthians 6:14
now, as any widely popular series, twilight has spawned fan fiction. & i have successfully managed to avoid most manifestations of this phenomenon (besides knowledge that it existed).
until 50 shades of grey.
now the first descriptor i heard of this book was that it was “mommy porn.” i wasn’t sure exactly what that meant. i didn’t know how graphic it was. and the point could be made that song of solomon is erotic, and it’s in the bible, so i thought i’d take the approach melissa writes was rumored the ancient israelites took to reading the song of songs: you didn’t read it until you were married or over thirty.
if only that had solved the problem.
i believe strongly and irrevocably in a few things:
1. that purity is something that is not merely physical. purity involves your actions, your heart, your mind, your mouth, your whole being.
2. that the marriage bed should be kept pure.
3. that we as women ought to be bringing our husbands, present or future, good all the days of our lives, not just the days we’re married to them.
so when i found out that 50 shades of grey was much, much more than what i had thought, all previous conclusions flew out the window. here, i’m going to share the new ones. i’m relying, in contrast to most of my blog posts, on the bible verses to do the explaining here. first, because they are where truth is found. i have any number of opinions about a million different things on any given day, but i really want the truth to be found here. second, because anything i do have to say is of little consequence in light of the biblical truth i’m about to share.
have we forgotten?
WE HAVE BEEN SET FREE.
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love… So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. // galatians 5:13,16-17
what fellowship can light have with darkness? what fellowship can freedom have with slavery?
we have been set free. we are no longer chained to and by sin. we are no longer slaves.
[Y]ou are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir. // galatians 4:7
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. // galatians 5:1
“but i’m not doing it myself,” someone might say.
but when Christ came to set us free from the law, that we might live under grace, He set also a new standard. it is now not just our actions, but our thoughts we must take captive to Christ. and even if it were just by our actions that He will one day judge us, our hands and our mouths betray our motivations, our beliefs, because they act from the heart.
But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. // matthew 15:18-19
50 shades of grey glorifies this lifestyle of sexual immorality and bondage. we have been called away from that lifestyle. we are His light. we are the salt of the earth.
No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. // luke 11:33-35
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. // matthew 5:13
beyond keeping ourselves and our bodies pure, we must keep the marriage bed pure. this applies whether you are married or not. if you are married, this means faithfulness and fidelity to Christ and your husband. if you are not married, this means faithfulness and fidelity to Christ alone.
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. // hebrews 13:4
we keep the marriage bed pure the same way we keep ourselves and our bodies pure: by taking every action, every thought, every desire captive to Christ. and as the bride of Christ, we as the body are supposed to be pure. how can He present us as blameless if we make no effort in His strength to present ourselves that way?
I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him. // 2 corinthians 11:2
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. // ephesians 5:25-27
But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation — if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. // colossians 1:22-23a
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. // 2 timothy 2:15
by His grace and deicidal sacrifice, we are made holy. the marriage bed is holy. the church, His radiant bride, is holy.
would we trade that for the world? are we “just reading a book,” or are we trading our souls?
What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? // mark 8:36
Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. // matthew 7:6
when joseph was tempted by potiphar’s wife, he didn’t sit there and analyze the moral ramifications, debate its rightness, or justify it in the name of escaping his reality. he fled.
he didn’t even go back for his cloak.
he just ran.
i implore you, in the holy name of Christ who has set us free from all sin, to flee from this book if you are thinking of reading it, in the middle of reading, or have already read it. i don’t know what that flight looks like in your life. you do. my prayer for our hearts is psalm 90:12 – “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
i want a heart of wisdom. i want a heart that seeks selflessly after His. & to do that, i, who would love to read everything, have to admit that i can’t do that if i want a heart of wisdom and purity.
“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. // 1 corinthians 6:12
let us not be mastered by our desires. let us set aside our lives in pursuit of Christ and His holiness. He has set us apart.
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. // jeremiah 1:5a
[Y]ou were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. // 1 corinthians 6:11
let us live squarely in that reality.
one of my favorite songs just now:
why do i fade black and white to grey, when the lines are clearly drawn?
