so, the first thing you should know about my birthday is it’s three days after christmas, and the second thing you should know is my parents always treated it completely separately and i never once felt shafted.
i MIGHT have felt shafted the year they forgot to buy me a christmas present but that is a WHOLE OTHER STORY.
one thing that did stink about my birthday is that because of christmas break, i never got to celebrate it at school, but this turned out to be a boon because not once have i ever worked on my birthday. except for the one time i closed at forever 21 on december 27 and we didn’t get out until about 1am… but that, too, is a WHOLE OTHER STORY.
one of my favorite things about my birthday is the people with whom i share it:
charlotte and i have been snail mail pen pals since we were 12. i remember opening the envelope with her name inside to find out we had the exact same birthday, down to the year. this is a picture of us at the houston rodeo the year we were 23, which is the first time we met in person.
dana and i struck up a conversation at influence in 2014, found out we had the same birthday (although not the same year), and proceeded to sit on a bench in the elevator lobby talking until the wee hours of the morning. we’ve been friends ever since! we got to see each again at influence last september, at influence this past april, and when we coincidentally ended up in lexington the same weekend, when this picture was taken.
as for which birthday is the most memorable, i’m not sure i have an easy answer for that. there are a few that stick out.
there was my 3rd or 4th birthday, which we celebrated at the leaps and bounds that my aunt and uncle owned, and which i only vaguely remember.
there was my 7th birthday, which we celebrated in honduras in a joint party for my brother and me, and which is hands-down the biggest birthday party either of us have ever had.
there was my 9th birthday, which we waited until summer to celebrate so i could have a pool party. we swam and ate and swung at the piñata my parents had hung in the front yard.
there was my 16th birthday, where we made pastelitos de piña, which are basically pineapple turnovers. a few of my friends spent the night and it was the last time i ever slept in my parents’ basement because a creature i shall not name came crawling out at us.
there was my 19th birthday, when my friend liz organized a surprise birthday lunch with some of my college friends at ruby tuesday.
and then there was my 22nd birthday, when she and my parents did it over again, except this time it was dinner at olive garden.
last but not least was this past birthday, my 25th. i spent the day hanging out with ameera when a snowstorm began and, instead of driving all the way back out to my house, we had an impromptu sleepover at hers, because i had to be at work the next day and she lives far closer than me to my workplace.
i wish i had pictures of these birthdays to post along with the descriptions, but my computer died last spring, so i’ve been blogging from my phone, where i don’t have any pictures. my parents have them on their computer, though, and i’ll be there later today, so look for those later!
what’s your most memorable birthday?
