as i mentioned yesterday, i really don’t make new year’s resolutions, but last year, i did make two: i wanted every book i read in 2012 to be a new read, and i wanted to read more books than i had the year before. i accomplished both.
i really hate making hard and fast rules for myself, so i tried to treat the no rereads as an exercise rather than a rule. i was exercising myself, so to speak, by stretching myself to read books i hadn’t read before. i also read far more books on a whim that i usually would, because i was so desperate for reading material and old favorites were off the table. some of my favorite books were the ones i picked up on a whim, such as téa obreht’s the tiger’s wife.
i’m currently in the middle of irene hannon’s lethal legacy and excited about starting my booklist for 2013. i’m going to try to stay away from rereads again this year, although i think i might reread a few old favorites. i also want to read more books than i did in 2012 (128 is the number to beat!) and read a few books i’ve let languish unread on my shelves for years (among them, charles dickens’s little dorrit, boccaccio’s the decameron, and dante’s the divine comedy).
what have been your favorite reads of 2012? any books you’re particularly eager to read in 2013? any recommendations for what i should read this year?
